Khartoum airport was temporarily shut down due to the unrest in the capital city and shootings experienced. The leader wanted the pilots to take part in the unrest and an order came for a shut down.
The Khartoum airport has also shut down all border and entry points into Sudan to prevent the spread of COVID-19. All flights from affected countries were cancelled.
There is an expected shut down of the Khartoum Airport in 2022 after completion and opening of the new airport which is currently under construction.

Khartoum International Airport Incidences and Accidents
- On 27th of October 1952, there was starboard undercarriage collapse of Vickers Viscount G-AHRF that was then operated by the Ministry of Supply causing damages beyond possible repair.
- 19th July of 1983, Douglas C-47A N480F of Chevron Oil, shortly after take-off from Khartoum, crashed due to failure of both engines of the flight caused by contaminated fuel. All on board survived the crash
- On 10th June 2008, Sudan Airways Flight 109 from Amman, Jordan landed and went off to the end of the runway which caused the right engine to catch fire spreading the fire rapidly. There were 184 survivors and 30 deaths.
- On 30th June 2008, there was an explosion of an Ilyushin II-76 causing the deaths of the 4 crew.
- 3rd of October 2018, there was a collision of two flights; Sudan Air Force Antonov An-32 and Sudan Air Force Antonov An-30.
Khartoum International Airport Shooting
There was a shooting case that took place in January 2020 in Khartoum near the headquarters of the National Intelligence and Security Service that forced the authority to call for temporary shut-down of Khartoum Airport. Claims were that it was the NISS agency employee responsible for the shots.
Khartoum International Airport Strike
On 28 May 2019 there was a strike aimed at pressuring military. The strike was led by the opposition group Alliance and caused hundreds of passengers to be stranded as the leader wanted the pilots of different airlines to participate. The strike went on for 2 days.

There is a new Khartoum International airport under construction to replace the current Khartoum Airport which is expected to be completed in 2022. The new airport is to be located 40 kilometers from the heart of the capital city. The new airport is planned to have an 86,000 square meter passenger terminal which is projected to hold 7.5 million passengers annually. There is a plan of a 4 kilometer runway which is projected to handle big aircrafts. There is also a projectedalso projected 300-room International hotel.
