Beijing Daxing International Airport has only one terminal. Surprisingly, it is the 2nd largest Single-Structure Airport Terminal in the World! The terminal was officially opened on September 30th, The much anticipated grand inaugural of the airport revealed an exceptional terminal building, the 2nd largest in the world after the New Istanbul Airport’s Terminal. Later in the future, a 2nd terminal (South Terminal) is intended to be built as the annual airport passenger traffic is predictable to take an upward trajectory to more than 100 million in the long run.
The Starfish-shape of Beijing Daxing International Airport as it is often called because of its shape covers an area of 1,000,000 m2 and has a large concourse and also has 5 “tentacles”, resembling a giant “octopus”. It also has a golden roof with scattered windows that allows the whole area to be illuminated by natural light.
The whole idea behind the design of the Terminal is to segregate the arrivals from the departures. As a consequence, there are two levels serving the arriving flights (domestic and international), and two more, handling the departure airport duties. This means that a single terminal building is able to take care of the needs of a large number of travelers, making the airport’s services even more operational and cost-effective.
The travelers have the opportunity to sail across through the central area where all the shops and the provided facilities are located and then, head to their departure gate, situated in one of the corridors. Amazingly, despite the huge size of the airport, the walking distance between the core center and each gate does not exceed 600 meters away. Travelers can shop and wander around care-free, knowing that their gate is only 8 minutes away at most.
Daxing airport spearheads the use of double-decked departure and arrival levels and is also fortified with the latest-technology amenities like facial recognition equipment and baggage-tracking systems. Beijing Daxing International Airport is also extremely environmentally friendly as their use of low-carbon policies, solar panels, and systems collecting the rainwater in order to use it later, are only some examples of the general viewpoints that enthuse the airport’s operation. Moreover, the whole design of Daxing airport is glimmered with Chinese tradition and culture.
Typical Chinese touches will be combined with futuristic elements while five outdoor traditional Chinese gardens adorn the five corridors. The airport shape, after all, can easily be compared to a giant phoenix, a very distinctive Chinese symbol. Finally, below the terminal, an enormous transportation hub is located containing the airport’s train and subway stations. In the anticipatable future, a City Terminal will be constructed at Lize Financial Business Area. Once finished, the passengers using the terminal in question will have the possibility to directly check in there and hand in their luggage which will be directed straight to the airport.
